Heavy Duty Bed Frames For Obese People And Overweight

I hope you love the products I've recommended below, just a heads up that as an Amazon associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This means I may earn commissions on products bought via links on this page.

In the age of increasing obesity rates, heavy duty bed frames are a must if you’re in the market for a bed frame that’s suited to obese, overweight and heavy people.

However, its easier said than done, as buying a bed frame capable of handling a heavy person isn’t as easy as one may think. You must make sure of a few things before you buy just any ole frame. As you and I are well aware, not all beds are created equal.

Us heavier guys tend to let’s say reshape the foundation. This is because standard bed frames are simply not built for our oversized bodies. Result: Broken bed and time to reinvest into yet another bed frame. I’ve seen it too many times, unfortunately.

But the good news is that if you buy a frame now that’s capable of taking additional weight, chances are it will last you longer than normal. Provided the frame you buy is from a reputable name in the business that specializes in manufacturing heavy-duty metal and steel bed frames.

The last thing you want is to buy a cheap frame claiming to hold 1000 pounds or more, just to discover 6 months down the track that it hasn’t been reinforced to the standard suitable for heavy people.

When you weigh 300 pounds or more, the bed frame you buy will need to be well above the combined weight of you, your partner and the weight of your mattress. Especially if you want the frame to last you for many years to come. Higher the weight capacity the better from my experience.

The Best Beds For The Obese Population

45MinST 3500 Pound Capacity

Best Beds For The Obese
I love this idea for a bed!. This Platform Metal Frame Bed is such a great money-saving and excellent invention. It’s so relevant to us heavy people. They can handle massive amounts of weight.

In this particular case, the King size 45MinST steel slat bed frame which is rated to withstand up to 3500lbs of evenly distributed weight.

Because of the reinforced design, they are super strong and I reckon one of the sturdiest bed frames you may ever come across. Just look at all those support beams.

Variety Of Sizes Available

What I also think is just fantastic is it’s very universal. They come in all your normal sizes, King Queen, etc. But they can be modified to look amazing. How so?. Well, you can either use these metal bed frames as is (Which is still pretty good) but if you like a bit of style. All you have to do is slide this frame inside your existing timber bed surrounds, provided there’s enough room.

Another cool feature of this frame is the ability to create storage areas under the bed. I really don’t like super low beds that you can’t even fit a single box underneath. This is not practical for many families.

Fortunately, this bed frame is raised to a 14-inch height which gives you the ability to store all those unsightly boxes, shoes or whatever you want. Check out the images of the storage space or go straight to the reviews on Amazon.com.

Having the extra height is also great because it’s easier for us heavier people to get in and out of bed. This is also applicable to people with bad backs. Sometimes a bed can be so low that its difficult to get into safely, so ensuring the bed’s height is correct for your height and weight is pivotal.

Best Bed Frames For Heavy Persons

Best Bed Frames For heavy PersonsI typically don’t like wooden slat beds, but this is due to the difficulty of assembly. But this King size T-3000 bed from Olee uses a much more heavy-duty steel construction.

From my research, this bed has been stated to withhold 2000 pounds (Not an official rating). No more trying to bend and twist those wooden slats into the slots on the bed.

Assembly on this bed is very simple and the steel slats simply made it a dream to put together. If you allow yourself 15 to 30 minutes, you should be right.

Apart from the easy assembly, the next best feature of this T-3000 Olee bed frame is that it has a greater height between floor and bed than that of the above 45MinST.

The T-3000 is a nice 18 inches in height. So when you load a king-size mattress on top, it’s pretty spot-on for how high a bed for a larger person should bed. The extra space under the bed is also a great way of storing larger and taller items around the house. An extra 4 inches in height really does make a difference.

The Beds Support System

The support of this bed frame is quite comforting. It has a 2000 pound weight capacity (according to Olee support on the amazon questions page)  which is quite enough for two larger size people. When you add the inclusion of maybe 300 lbs for a king-size mattress, you are left with some nice weight capacity freedom.

Because everything is steel on this frame, you should expect it to go the distance in terms of longevity. There are 9 support legs on this bed frame. 3 on either sides and 3 more that run down the center of the bed. This creates a very even weight distribution construction.

This is how it would achieve such a high weight capacity. Another thing I like about this frame is the lip that runs around the edge of the frame. This helps to keep the mattress in position and not slide off the bed frame. A really good idea and on that should be used more often.

Overall I find the T-300o Olee King bed frame to be very quiet to sleep on and very stable. It certainly is one of the more heavy-duty bed frames out there.

My only suggestion would be that if you sleep on memory foam, I would lay a cut to size bit of fibro or plywood down. Even tho the gaps are considerably small between slats (8″ between center to center). Be sure to drill holes into the ply hood so that the memory foam can breathe.

Heavy Duty King Bed Frame

Heavy Duty King Bed FrameKnickerbocker is a quality brand in the bedding department that specializes in producing American made heavy-duty metal beds and has been around since 1919 where they first got started in New York. It wasn’t until the 90’s when they really made a scene nationwide and ever since they have been the go-to brand for heavy-duty bedding.

Knickerbocker has a range of heavy-duty king bed frames that are well suited to heavy people. Claimed to be their strongest is the ‘Monster’ bed frame which has 2-inch thick bed rails for double the strength. What’s fascinating about this bed frame is that it is a convertible frame.

The Monster can convert from a twin to a California King and all the sizes in between. All without the addition of any extra tools or equipment. So the Monster is certainly a good choice for someone not yet sure on what size bed to buy.

You can find the Monster by Knickerbocker on amazon.com here.

The Embrace – King – California King Heavy Duty Bed Frame

California King Heavy Duty Bed Frame
Of all the Knickerbocker bed frames, it’s the Embrace that really grabs me. While all their beds are heavy-duty rated, the Embrace has extra features that I find quite appealing.

On the knickerbocker website, it says the Embrace can hold up to 5000 pounds of weight. A bed frame with 5000lbs weight capacity is out of this world. It’s more than enough for any heavy couple on this planet.

The Embrace is available on amazon here, but you will notice that the weight capacity listed on amazon says 2000lbs, so I don’t know what’s up with that.

Why I Love This Heavy Duty King Bed Frame

Just the fact that it’s available in King or California King is enough to satisfy many, but for me, the attention to detail is what stands out.

To start with, the Embrace has 7 points of contact. What this means is that the mattress is in contact with the 7 support legs of the bed frame. This provides a stable and supportive foundation. The extra support leg may not seem like much, but when you’re a heavy person, the center pole is very much required to prevent the bed from sagging in the center.

Unique Design To Eliminate Bed Squeak

Besides being one robust heavy duty bed frame, the Embrace offers a unique approach to the annoying bed squeak. Us heavier people put more strain and pressure on the joints and rails of any bed frame, which can make the bed squeak more than usual.

The Embrace has a unique way of eliminating this problem for us due to the fiberglass infused Polymer Resin used in construction. What this polymer resin does is act as a sound barrier between the frame and the foundation.

The resin actually absorbs the excess pressure applied during contact, minimizing any squeaking or rattling we are so used to in a metal bed frame. So there’s no metal on metal contact to make any annoying squeak sound as you go about your sleeping habits.

A More Hygenic Bed Frame

The added benefits of the resin include less build-up of dust and pollen as there are no bed skirts. Which is a hygienic approach to keeping your bed clean and safer. The resin coating is also softer and smoother to touch, which means there are no sharp edges and corners that can jap and prod you as you get out of bed.

If I had to say there was one negative to this bed, it would be that the frame is quite heavy when assembling. But this just reassures its heavy-duty rating. Fortunately, assembly is super easy and can take a regular person just a few minutes to assemble. But if you’re slightly weakened, a second person will certainly help with lifting the heavy-duty metal rails.

The other downside to a bed frame like this is the lack of underneath storage. As the bed frame only sits 7.5″ from the floor, storing and cleaning under the bed can become an issue for some people.

Best Platform Beds For Heavy People

South Shore Furniture 500 Lbs Capacity

heavy duty beds for big people
Exploring away from the steel-framed beds we venture into the complete package bed frame with bed head etc. Now, this bed frame by South Shore Furniture is rated to hold up to 500 pounds.

This is good for overweight people or even better for the big man who wants to stretch his legs. Available in Full, King or Queen which is available in either Chocolate or Pure White.

No Box Spring Required

As this bed doesn’t require a box spring and is ready to go as is, it’s a good choice for the consumer on a budget. The under board is a dead flat surface and is another great choice for memory foam mattresses designed for the plus-size consumer.

The mattresses are held in place by snug-fitting moldings. Which is great for the times you don’t want the mattress sliding around. Underneath the bed, you can find a convenient storage place for your bed sheets, pillows etc. Equivalent

Overall we think this bed is good bang for your buck. Not too much quality is compromised with the price and it looks rather nice and well made. It’s quite a sturdy and relatively squeak-free frame.

Highly recommended if you don’t want to spend an arm and a leg. A great investment for the under 500 Lbs category. But do note, that you need to include the weight of your mattress into this capacity.

Because of this, the bed may not be suitable for two heavier people to share. Ideally, this would make a great bed for one heavy person to sleep alone. Or a heavy person with a not so heavy partner.

Best Big And Tall Bed Frame Twin XL To King Size

Heavy Duty King

*Note: Zinus have removed weight capacities from their product descriptions. Previously this frame was noted to have a 4400-pound capacity.

As this information is not readily available at present, I highly suggest contacting Zinus support to clarify the capacity. More often then not, companies will say the capacities are just a guide and may actually not reflect the true potential.

With up to a high weight capacity and a long 80-inch frame, the Elite Smart mattress foundation is the ideal big and tall bed frame. For the single user, the Twin Xl is also 80 inches long with a 500-pound weight capacity.

But for the larger parties, the King or California King is the way to go. But it’s important to distinguish the difference between the regular and the ELITE series by Zinus. This is especially important for heavier people.

It’s Elite All The Way

As a big man myself I know the importance of having true heavy-duty equipment. Especially when it comes to a bed frame. Some may claim to be heavy-duty but turn out to be a waste of time and money. Which is why you must consider the Elite version of this bed frame.

The Elite is built stronger and has a higher weight capacity, depending on the frame size you buy. So when reading reviews for this bed frame, make sure you are reading the reviews for the ‘Big and Tall’ heavy duty bed frame. The regular frame simply doesn’t cut it for us.

The difference between the two is that the Elite frame uses heavy-duty square tubing whereas the regular is just a wire top which decreases the stability and strength of the frame.

It’s Fold-able & Convenient

What’s great about the 14″ Zinus is that you no longer need a box spring. This frame can support all sorts of mattresses including spring and hybrid memory foam mattresses.

Assembly is super easy and requires no tools at all to set up. It unfolds and you then snap the end supports into position. Simple and effective. Which also makes getting the bed into rooms much easier.

What’s great about this 14″ frame is the under bed storage. When you minus the steel frame from the equation, you are left with a good 13 inches of height to store away your items.

The last feature that is often overlooked is the recessed legs. The legs that support the frame are pushed back an inch or so and not flush with the bed frame. What this means is you will have less chance of kicking your toe on the bed legs.

Overall the ELITE Zinus 14″ bed frame is a great choice for big and tall people. The incredible strength and oversized dimensions give plenty of room and support the big person’s needs.

Alternative 500 Lb Rated Bed Frame

Another moderately priced bed frame by South Shore Furniture. Similar to the above bed in many ways with a slight twist in design.

This bed is also rated to hold up to 500 pounds but is only suitable for Full or Queen size mattresses. Again, it’s important to take into consideration the weight of the mattress.

I like how the drawer is pulled out from the end of the bed rather than the sides. This is especially helpful in smaller rooms where space on either side of the bed is an issue. But be sure to position the bed so that lengthways, the end of the bed is not in line with a swinging door. This could make it difficult to open and close the door if you have the drawers of the bed out at the same time.

You may be wondering if plus-sized Women can actually fit into this adorable bed?. Simple answer Yes!. It is a twin size frame which is still the same length bed as a King or Queen. Just not as wide and still rated to 300 lbs. So its really a decent bed for any Women, overweight or not!.

Folding Beds For Heavy People

High Weight Capacity Folding Beds
If your tight for space living in a tiny apartment, or need a heavy duty folding bed for heavy people in your guest room. Then a folding bed may be for you.

However if your planning to use this as a permanent solution to your bedding needs, I suggest to look into getting an additional mattress for extra comfort. As with most folding beds, the mattresses are not as good. Especially for the larger persons. Just some food for thought.

How Much Weight Can A Full To King Size Bed Hold

Determining how much weight a king bed can hold, or queen or full etc comes down to the design and construction of the frame. As you can see it varies from bed model to bed model.

It’s quite obvious that metal or steel beds can hold a vast amount of weight. But it also comes down to the design of the frame. Whether or not it’s been reinforced to hold the extra weight or not. There are plenty of steel beds which aren’t heavy-duty.

Allow For The Weight Of The Bedding

If you don’t end up buying one of these 2000-5000 pound capacity bed frames, you need to pay particular attention to the weight of your bedding and mattress.

When working out how much weight your bed needs to hold you must include the weight of a mattress. Mattresses can vary in weight so it’s a good idea to overcompensate.

A memory foam king size mattress can weigh from 130lbs to 180lbs while an innerspring mattress can weigh upwards of 100 pounds.

A heavy-duty innerspring mattress will weigh more and also provide a little more bounce in the bed. So ensuring you have a robust and strong bed frame like one of the above is essential when using a mattress like this.

Then there’s the additional weight of your blankets, doona, sheets, etc. All these items add up and some are quite heavy. If you end up buying a bed frame with a weight capacity close to the weight of your combined body weights, you will certainly need to recalculate how much weight your bed frame can actually hold.

Heavy Duty Bed Frame Buyers Guide

  • Like I always say, when it comes to the big and tall, you cannot just buy the cheapest model available, no matter what product your searching for. Cheap sometimes equals inferior quality not built for us heavy people. Typically you will find the cheaper models have a lower weight capacity. However, this is not always the case.
  • Make sure you know your weight and then find a bed frame that has an adequate weight capacity to handle your weight. Also, take into consideration the weights of any; Wife, partner, kids, dogs, etc. that will be sharing the pleasure of your new bed. It all adds up to the overall weight limit.
  • Read Reviews. I can’t stress this enough. Most reviews I share are for us big people to help you find the right product quick and easy. If the product description doesn’t state the weight capacity for the bed frame, read the reviews and especially the questions asked by other consumer reviews. Most of the time the weight capacity is answered in these questions.
  • Steel bed frames I find offer great support for the heavier load bearing. I know they are not the most beautiful bed frames in the world, but at least you can sleep with pure confidence knowing your bed will hold your weight. Check for extra reinforcement support bars with metal brackets, or have been welded.
  • DON’T forget to take into consideration Mattresses For Large People either. A suitable mattress can mean the difference between sleeping on the clouds and sleeping on what feels like a concrete slab dressed with some fake materials.

Assembling Can Be Challenging Assembling A Bed Frame

When you buy a bed frame that is quite robust in nature, assembling it can be tricky. Not always, as is with the Embrace, which takes less than 5 minutes due to the design.

But for many of the larger bulkier frames, assembling it by yourself can be challenging. Especially as a heavy person as mobility and strength can often be a disadvantage. Not to mention us guys with our bellies prohibiting access to things directly in front of us.

Losing weight or the belly isn’t going to happen instantly, so in order to resolve this issue, don’t be afraid to ask for help when assembling the bed frame. There’s been times when I have had 3 people help me assemble a bed frame, simply because the bed rails can be very heavy and trying to align them up with the screw holes on the frame is difficult with the weight of the rail.

Ensure The Bed Frame Is Suitable For Your Floor

Another small tip is to ensure that the bed frame you buy is suitable for the type of flooring in your bedroom. Most are fine on the carpet, but if you have vinyl or hardwood floors, you need to ensure that the legs on the frame don’t damage the flooring.

If it’s too late, make sure you buy some floor protectors, or a large rug to go under your bed. This will put a barrier between the bed legs and the floor.

Don’t Void Warranty On Your Frame

I’m sure there are many people that buy a bed frame without ever considering the weight capacity. But when you’re a heavy person buying a heavy duty bed frame, you need to ensure you don’t exceed the specified weight limit.

The weight rating on a bed is genuinely considered a guideline, but it is one that I would never go over. While the frames may have been tested to hold 2000 pounds, or 4000 pounds etc. This is just an initial test.

It’s not a true test of how a bed frame endures daily use under such weight restraints and pressure. So if the bed was to ever break and the amount of weight you put the bed under exceeds the maximum weight capacity specified, there’s a chance the manufacturer may void any warranty on the bed frame.
